The Magic Carpet Ride

By Carrie Zahradnik

How does this sound?  Are you ready for incredible scenery, excellent cuisine, and riding with friends through scenic Vermont from country inn to country inn?  This magic carpet ride promises the most relaxing, renewing, beautiful time in the saddle you’ve ever had.  Can you imagine this and never being on the bit?  Yes, dressage riders, this wonderful trip is skillfully presented by the Vermont Icelandic Horse Farm.  Since 1988 they have arranged treks through the scenic and famous Sugarbush Ski country, and the Mad River Valley, near historic Waitsfield, Vermont.

The Vermont Icelandic Horse Farm proves that good things do come in small packages.  These 13 to 14.2 hand horses – yes, horses (don’t ever insult them with any pony reference) represent one of the oldest and purest breeds in the world.  These horses have two unique gaits, the Tolt (running walk) and the Skeip (flying pace).  They are sure footed, efficient, excellent tempered and great fun!  As a dressage rider, the most difficult challenge is allowing these horses the head and neck carriage they require – then just relax!  With their smooth gaits, and self secure temperaments one actually felt like a child again, floating across lush valleys, streams and the beautiful Vermont Mountains.

With so much to see and do there are many different trips of varying lengths throughout the season of May 1 through November 1.  I chose the trip during peak fall foliage.  Each country inn we stayed in was gracious, comfortable and gave us a wonderful rest after each day’s journey.  There was even a free afternoon available for visiting nearby Stowe, the famous Ben & Jerry’s Plant or indulging in a spa experience.  This trip was shared by students and friends, Susan McIntire and Kodie Carpenter.  We all agreed that the Icelandic horses won our hearts, and we can’t wait to go back again!
